The First Tee Life Skill Experience is divided into four levels with Par for new participants and progressing through Birdie, Eagle, and Ace. Each of the Life Skills Experience is delivered seamlessly into golf-learning activities.
Par focuses on interpersonal communication and self management skills. Birdie deals primarily with goal setting. Participants learn how to introduce themselves, respect others, keep a positive attitude, control their emotions, and set and achieve individual goals.
While the emphasis in Par and Birdie is on individual, Eagle focuses more on group and community interaction. Eagle is designed for participants who have demonstrated a commitment to both the game of golf and to attaining an associated set of life skills. Prior to entering the Eagle level, these participants have demonstrated their ability to apply life skills, displayed a progression of golf skill acquisitions and performance, and been a role model for The First Tee Code of Conduct. Participants learn to deal more effectively with others so they can become good citizens and exert a positive influence both at The First Tee and in their communities.
Ace is designed to help participants further develop as individuals and as assets to their communities. They begin thinking about career planning process, matching skills and interests to potential job. Participants also explore what it means to be physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy.
The Life Skill Experience is not targeted for specific age groups however there are minimal age recommendations in order for participants to have the appropriate cognitive abilities to understand the material. The minimum age recommendation for each life skill are as follows: Par 8 yrs, Birdie 11 yrs, Eagle 14 yrs, and Ace 14 yrs or in ninth grade.
